What is a single-phase voltage regulator?

The core of a single-phase voltage regulator consists of a ring-shaped coil and a sliding carbon brush. When you rotate the handle of the regulator, the carbon brush moves along the surface of the coil, changing the number of turns of the coil connected to the circuit.
According to the principle of transformers, this directly alters the voltage ratio between the input and output, allowing you to continuously and smoothly adjust the output voltage within a certain range (for example, from 0 volts to 250 volts), just like adjusting the brightness of a light bulb with a knob.
This voltage regulation method outputs pure sine waves, has a simple structure and is robust and durable. It is most commonly found in laboratories and electrical repair shops, used to provide adjustable test voltages for equipment, or to manually adjust the voltage in areas with unstable voltages.
At the same time, it is also the core operating component of automatic voltage regulators (servo regulators) - in automatic voltage regulators, the carbon brush is automatically slid by a small motor.

How does a single-phase voltage regulator work?

The working principle of a single-phase voltage regulator is similar to manually adjusting a "voltage faucet". By turning the handle of the regulator, the carbon brushes will move along the coil. This is equivalent to changing the position at which the current "draws" from the coil, just like adjusting the size of the faucet opening.
According to the working principle of the transformer, the output voltage is directly proportional to the number of coil turns. Therefore, wherever the carbon brushes slide, the voltage will change accordingly. The entire process is very smooth, allowing you to adjust the voltage freely within a certain range (for example, from 0 to 250 volts) like adjusting the light level.
This purely mechanical approach ensures that the output is a very clean sine wave, with a simple and durable structure and strong overload capacity. Its most common use is as a "manual voltage stabilizer": it can be used to set a test voltage for equipment in the laboratory, or to manually adjust the voltage to the normal value in areas with unstable voltage.
