Why Are Frequency Converters Essential?

In industrial production, motors are ubiquitous. Fans, pumps, compressors, conveyor belts... They consume over 60% of the electricity in factories. For a long time, the operation mode of these motors was very "rough": either full speed or shutdown. When the air volume was high, the valves were closed; when the water pressure was high, the bypass was opened - a large amount of energy was wasted in pipes and baffles.

The emergence of frequency converters changed this situation.

Frequency converters do not merely make the motors "run slower", but truly enable the motors to "output as needed". When only 70% of the air volume is required on the production line, the frequency converter makes the fan run at 70% of the speed; when the water pressure reaches the set value, the frequency converter automatically reduces the speed to maintain it. The result is: electricity costs have actually decreased, and the mechanical impact on the equipment has also been reduced.

Take a 160kW fan as an example. If it is controlled by frequency conversion, under an average load of 80%, it can save over 200,000 yuan in electricity costs per year. This is not a theoretical value, but the result of numerous on-site measurements.

Frequency Converter

However, the role of frequency converters is far beyond saving electricity.

At the process end, frequency converters turn the motors that were originally "able to only run at full speed" into a controllable execution unit. Injection molding machines need segmented pressure, and frequency converters can be coordinated for control; mixing machines need constant torque, and frequency converters can output sufficient force at low speeds; even for cranes and elevators, the leveling accuracy is also finely adjusted by frequency converters.

At the equipment protection end, frequency converters directly solve the "motor startup shock" problem. When starting a large motor directly, the current surges to 5-7 times the rated value, the grid voltage is pulled down, and the equipment on the same line is affected as well, and couplings, bearings, and belts are more prone to damage. Frequency converters allow the motor to accelerate smoothly from zero, with the starting current controlled within 1.5 times, and the lifespan of the motor and the transmission system are significantly extended.

At the grid quality end, many frequency converters also integrate harmonic suppression and power factor correction functions. For factory power distribution systems, frequency converters are no longer just a "load", but an intelligent node that can participate in regulation.

Frequency converters are not a "universal key". They have their own applicable boundaries:

For occasions requiring precise speed control, energy-saving renovations, soft start, and process control, frequency converters are the first choice.

For occasions with long-term constant-speed operation, extremely high power supply quality requirements, or extremely limited budgets, frequency converters may not be the optimal solution.

But it cannot be denied that in today's industrial trend towards automation and intelligence, frequency converters have become an indispensable part of the motor drive system. With relatively controllable costs, frequency converters have brought three tangible rewards: energy consumption reduction, process improvement, and equipment lifespan extension.

Currently, Yibaling Power Supply Equipment Co., Ltd. continues to deepen its research and development in the field of frequency converters, providing general and dedicated frequency converter solutions from 0.75kW to 500kW for typical loads such as fans, pumps, air compressors, and conveying equipment, supporting V/F control, open-loop vector, and closed-loop vector modes, and can be equipped with filters, reactors, and remote communication interfaces according to on-site needs.

A good frequency converter does not merely make the motor "run slower", but makes the entire system "operate more intelligently".
