Walk into almost any factory substation, and you’ll see one or more square, grey metal boxes labelled “SG”. They don’t spin like motors, they don’t blink like PLCs – they just sit there, quietly taking the incoming voltage and turning it into exactly what your machines need. That CNC lathe over there? That imported laser cutter? They run smoothly because this unassuming box has their back.

The SG series is a threephase drytype transformer. But unlike the SBK autotransformer we talked about earlier – which saves material by sharing one winding – the SG takes a different approach: isolation, reliability, and the ability to go either up or down in voltage. So what’s actually happening inside that metal case?

Two separate windings, each doing its own job

The SG is an isolation transformer. It has two independent windings – primary and secondary – that are electrically insulated from each other. Power transfers from input to output via electromagnetic induction, but the circuits never physically connect.

Think of it this way: the SBK autotransformer is like a single rope used at both ends; the SG isolation transformer is like two separate ropes – they “pass force” through the air (magnetic field) but never touch. This separation brings a critical benefit: complete electrical isolation. Line noise, surges, and harmonics from the grid don’t easily travel through to your sensitive equipment.

The voltage change works by the classic transformer principle – the ratio of turns between primary and secondary coils. If the primary has 380 turns and the secondary has 220, then 380V in gives you 220V out – stepdown. Reverse the numbers, and you get stepup.

The SG series can be customwound for a wide range of input/output combinations – common ones are 380V→220V, 380V→200V, or the other way around. Some models also come with tapping points for finetuning the output voltage within a small range.

Dry, isolated, and tough – three words that define it

The SG is a drytype transformer – no oil, so no leaks and no fire risk. The coils are vacuumcast in epoxy resin, which resists moisture, dust, and corrosion. The core uses highgrade coldrolled silicon steel, keeping losses low and noise minimal.

Efficiency is solid – fullload efficiency can exceed 97.5%, and noload loss is below 0.8%. To put that in perspective, a 160kW unit running continuously can save over 12,000 kWh a year – that’s not marketing fluff, that’s real money off your electricity bill.

Insulation class is usually F or H, with temperature rise kept between 65K and 80K. In plain English: it handles heat well, lasts long, and asks for very little maintenance.

Pretty much everywhere you can think of.

SG transformers show up in machine tools, CNC equipment, servo drive control panels, production line power supplies, and lighting systems. Imported machinery with a different voltage? Hook up an SG to convert 380V to 220V or 200V – problem solved.

Go bigger: subways, highrise buildings, airports, stations, docks, hospitals, data centres – anywhere that demands high power reliability and safety, you’ll see SG drytype transformers. Because they’re nonflammable, nonexplosive, and maintenancefree, they can be placed right next to the loads, saving you a fortune on expensive lowvoltage cable runs.

How is SG Step up and down Transformer different from the SBK autotransformer?

This is worth calling out clearly. The SBK shares one winding – compact, cheap, efficient – but there’s a direct electrical path between input and output; no isolation. The SG has two separate windings – input and output are completely isolated, giving you better safety, cleaner power, and stronger immunity to grid disturbances.

So which one to choose? If you just need voltage conversion and cost matters most, SBK is a great value pick. If your equipment is sensitive (precision servos, medical devices, PLC systems) or you need galvanic isolation for safety, the SG is the right call.

The bottom line

The SG series isn’t rocket science – it’s two independent coils and good old electromagnetic induction. But that straightforward design makes it one of the most reliable voltageconversion workhorses you’ll find on any factory floor. Step up or down, isolated, drytype, nearly maintenancefree – these qualities let it run for a decade or more without missing a beat.

It’s not the kind of gear you stop to admire. But take it away, and a whole lot of machinery would grind to a halt. That’s what I call a true unsung hero of industry.
